Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - The Q4 U.S. earnings season kicked off last week. Banking results indicated an improving overall economic and business environment; however, the three major U.S. stock indices all recorded losses, with the Dow falling 0.29%, the S&P 500 down 0.38%, and the Nasdaq declining 0.66%. This week, major companies including Netflix, Johnson & Johnson, and Intel are set to report earnings. The World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos will also take place this week, with Jensen Huang and Donald Trump among the attendees. On Friday, the Bank of Japan will announce its interest rate decision. Markets generally expect the bank to maintain its benchmark interest rate at 0.75%, remaining on hold following December's rate hike.

Preview of Major Events

Netflix (NFLX.US), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.US), and Intel (INTC.US) Among Those Reporting Earnings

The U.S. earnings season is reaching its peak, with companies like Netflix (NFLX.US), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.US), Intel (INTC.US), GE Aerospace (GE.US), Procter & Gamble (PG.US), and Interactive Brokers (IBKR.US) set to release results. The stock market rally is currently trading near recent highs. Intel (INTC.US) will report earnings after the bell on Thursday. Wall Street consensus expects the chipmaker to post earnings per share of 8 cents, a 40% year-on-year decline, on sales of $13.4 billion, down 6%. Against the backdrop of U.S. government support and attention on its 18A node chip manufacturing process, Intel is attempting to implement a turnaround strategy.

Davos Winter Meeting Begins: Trump's Attendance Draws Global Spotlight

From January 19 to 23 (Monday to Friday), the 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum will be held in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland. Themed "The Spirit of Dialogue," this year's meeting is expected to attract over 60 heads of state and thousands of global leaders from various sectors.

U.S. President Donald Trump will lead the largest-ever American delegation to the event and is expected to deliver a speech on the 21st, with his economic and geopolitical agendas under intense global scrutiny. Furthermore, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, and core figures from companies like OpenAI and Mistral AI will gather, ensuring that AI governance, development, and global impact become core topics.

Bank of Japan Interest Rate Decision: Will It Signal Further Hikes?

On Friday, January 23, the Bank of Japan will announce its interest rate decision. The market widely expects the bank to keep its benchmark rate unchanged at 0.75%, remaining on hold following its December hike. Although December inflation data released prior to the meeting may show easing price pressures, core CPI is expected to remain elevated. Given domestic political uncertainty, Governor Kazuo Ueda's post-meeting remarks are expected to remain cautious.

Makoto Sakurai, a former member of the Bank of Japan's Policy Board, noted that the central bank will need to raise interest rates by at least June or July, though such a move could occur as early as April.
