Nvidia’s $2 Billion Investment in Marvell: What Is Marvell?

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - On March 31, 2026, local time, NVIDIA ( NVDA) announced a $2 billion investment in semiconductor giant Marvell ( MRVL) and the establishment of a deep strategic partnership.

Following the announcement, Marvell shares surged 12.8% intraday, while NVIDIA's stock rose 5.62%, with both companies' shares continuing their upward trend in the next day's pre-market session. The core of this collaboration is the full integration of Marvell into the NVIDIA AI ecosystem, with both parties achieving hardware-level deep integration through NVLink Fusion technology to co-develop next-generation AI infrastructure and communication networks.

Under the agreement, Marvell will provide customized XPUs (accelerated processing units) and NVLink Fusion-compatible scale-out networking solutions for the NVIDIA ecosystem. In turn, NVIDIA will open its core technologies—including Vera CPUs, ConnectX NICs, Bluefield DPUs, NVLink interconnects, and Spectrum-X switches—to help customers build semi-customized AI computing systems. This deep integration will significantly simplify customer development workflows, enabling heterogeneous AI infrastructure to interface seamlessly with NVIDIA’s GPU, LPU, networking, and storage platforms.

Beyond cooperation in AI infrastructure, the two companies will also engage in joint R&D for silicon photonics and 5G/6G communication networks. Marvell will leverage its strengths in high-speed analog chips, optical digital signal processors (DSPs), silicon photonics, and custom chips, combining them with NVIDIA's Aerial AI-RAN technology to drive the AI-driven transformation of global communication networks.

NVIDIA Founder and CEO Jensen Huang stated: "Marvell is a fantastic investment. I’ve always wanted to say that."

He emphasized that the partnership will help customers utilize the NVIDIA AI infrastructure ecosystem more efficiently to build specialized AI computing power at scale.

Marvell CEO Matt Murphy, meanwhile, believes the collaboration "highlights the central role of high-speed interconnects, optical connectivity, and accelerated infrastructure in the scaling of AI," and described it as a "true leapfrog opportunity."

Marvell is already a significant beneficiary of the AI wave. The company recently issued guidance that exceeded market expectations and expects revenue growth to accelerate further in 2027, driven by AI demand.

NVIDIA's investment undoubtedly provides new momentum for Marvell. Matt Murphy stated: "This investment not only provides us with capital support but, more importantly, allows us to integrate deeply into the NVIDIA AI ecosystem to jointly expand into larger market opportunities."

The Strategic Significance of Nvidia’s $2 Billion Investment

This investment represents a critical component of Nvidia's recent series of strategic initiatives.

According to incomplete statistics, since the beginning of 2026, Nvidia has completed 19 investments, including massive investments of $122 billion in OpenAI and $30 billion in Anthropic, as well as strategic capital injections of $2 billion each into several tech companies such as Synopsys, CoreWeave, and Coherent.

Jensen Huang stated that every transaction is an "extension of our ecosystem."

Bloomberg Intelligence data shows that Nvidia currently holds $63 billion in cash reserves and is expected to generate as much as $400 billion in free cash flow over the next two years, providing a solid foundation for its continuous strategic investments.

From an industry perspective, Nvidia's series of investments is building an ecosystem that covers the entire AI infrastructure value chain. Through capital ties, Nvidia has integrated key technical components—such as chip design tools, cloud computing platforms, optical interconnect devices, and customized chips—into its own ecosystem, creating a strong synergistic effect.

Market analysts believe that Nvidia's investment in Marvell is more than just a financial partnership; it also reflects its judgment on the future trends of AI infrastructure.

As AI application scenarios continue to expand, standalone GPU computing power is no longer enough to meet all needs, and customized ASICs and XPUs will become important supplements. By incorporating Marvell into its ecosystem, Nvidia can provide customers with more diverse computing power options, further consolidating its leading position in the field of AI infrastructure.

For Marvell, this cooperation is also of great significance. By accessing Nvidia's NVLink Fusion platform, Marvell's customized XPUs can be seamlessly integrated with Nvidia's GPUs, DPUs, and other products, significantly reducing system integration challenges for customers.

What Is Marvell?

Marvell is a global leader in fabless semiconductor design, focusing on chip solutions for data infrastructure. Its core business revolves around AI, cloud computing, telecommunications, and enterprise sectors, with products covering network communications, accelerated computing, data storage, and information security, aiming to help customers enhance the efficiency and security of data transmission and processing.

As a leader in the Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) sector, Marvell's custom chips provide a critical technical complement to Nvidia's GPUs. In the current AI computing market, GPUs dominate due to their powerful general-purpose computing capabilities; however, to meet ultra-high compute requirements in specific scenarios, ASICs are becoming the choice for an increasing number of hyperscale data centers due to their higher compute efficiency and lower power consumption. With its deep expertise in custom chip design, Marvell offers customers one-stop solutions from architectural design to mass production and delivery.

In recent years, Marvell has strengthened its technical capabilities through a series of strategic acquisitions, including the $3.25 billion acquisition of silicon photonics company Celestial AI and the $540 million acquisition of CXL switching technology firm XConn Technologies, further refining its footprint in AI infrastructure.

These acquisitions enable Marvell to provide complete solutions ranging from chip design to optical interconnects, meeting the demands of next-generation AI systems for high performance, low power consumption, and scalable connectivity.

Company management stated that they will continue to focus on the AI and data center sectors, consolidating their leading position in the data infrastructure semiconductor field through technological innovation and strategic acquisitions.
