ByteDance Secures $30 Billion Loan, Asia's Second-Largest Loan Deal This Year

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - On September 3, TikTok parent ByteDance secured a syndicated loan of approximately $29.6 billion, making it the second-largest US dollar-denominated loan transaction in Asia in 2026, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The company initially planned to raise $20 billion, but ultimately upsized the loan to $29.6 billion due to strong bank subscription demand.

The funds raised will be used primarily for general corporate purposes, with a maturity of 3 years that can be extended up to 5 years, according to people familiar with the matter. However, the agreement has not yet been formally signed as participating banks are still finalizing the allocation plan. Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase served as coordinators for the financing, which carries an initial margin of SOFR plus 68 basis points, lower than the SOFR plus 85 basis points on ByteDance's previous offshore loan.

The financing attracted over $30 billion in subscriptions, demonstrating that banks remain highly interested in ByteDance's fundraising capacity and corporate creditworthiness. At its current size, only one US dollar loan in Asia has surpassed ByteDance this year: SoftBank Group's $40 billion bridge loan signed in March.

ByteDance's massive financing comes as the company continues to double down on artificial intelligence. People familiar with the matter said ByteDance is considering increasing its 2026 capital expenditure to about $70 billion, more than double last year's level, with funds primarily directed toward data centers and AI infrastructure. Global tech giants have also been expanding AI spending recently, with Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT), and Meta (META) expected to reach a combined $725 billion in related capital expenditures this year.

ByteDance last tapped the global loan market in 2024, when it raised about $10.8 billion through a syndicate of around 20 financial institutions. By contrast, the substantially larger size of this financing reflects the company's growing funding needs for AI infrastructure development and global business expansion.
