Palo Alto Networks Earnings Preview: Q4 Revenue Expected to Grow 32%, Wall Street Highest Target at $475

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - Last week, after CrowdStrike (CRWD) reported better-than-expected financial results, its stock price once surged over 20%, significantly boosting investor confidence in the cybersecurity industry. Now, market focus is shifting to another industry giant, Palo Alto Networks (PANW), which will report its fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings results after the U.S. market close on September 1 ET.

According to FactSet data, Wall Street expects Palo Alto Networks' fourth-quarter revenue to be approximately $3.35 billion, up about 32% year-over-year, with adjusted earnings per share expected at $0.98. By comparison, the company's previous-quarter revenue was $3.002 billion, up 31.15% year-over-year, with adjusted EPS at $0.85.

CrowdStrike's strong performance previously demonstrated that amidst the rapid adoption of AI applications, enterprise demand for cybersecurity products has not weakened; instead, it has further increased alongside new security risks brought by AI. This has also led investors to focus on whether Palo Alto Networks can continue a similar trend in this earnings report and provide new upside momentum for PANW's stock price.

Palo Alto's Last-Quarter Results

Palo Alto Networks' revenue reached $3.002 billion last quarter, up 31% year-over-year, exceeding market expectations. Subscription and support revenue came in at $2.408 billion, accounting for roughly 80% of total revenue, while product revenue was $594 million, representing less than 20%. This structure reflects the company's gradual transition from a traditional firewall hardware vendor to a platform-based cybersecurity company focused on software subscriptions, cloud security, and ongoing support services.

As the subscription and support business has strong renewal characteristics, its revenue visibility is typically higher than that of one-time hardware sales. Once customers adopt Prisma SASE, Cortex XSIAM, cloud security, and identity security products simultaneously, switching costs and cross-selling potential also increase, which is precisely the core logic behind Palo Alto Networks' continued push for its "platformization" strategy.

However, the 31% revenue growth rate last quarter did not come entirely from organic growth, with CyberArk and Chronosphere contributing a combined $388 million in revenue. Therefore, investors need to distinguish between revenue expansion driven by acquisitions and the growth rate of the core business itself.

$3.35 Billion Revenue Estimate Nears Top End of Guidance

Palo Alto Networks previously projected fourth-quarter revenue of $3.345 billion to $3.355 billion, representing year-over-year growth of approximately 32%, with adjusted earnings per share guidance of $0.96 to $0.98. The company's fourth-quarter guidance also anticipated NGS ARR to reach $8.9 billion to $8.95 billion, up 59% to 60% year-over-year, and RPO to reach $20.9 billion to $21.0 billion, up 32% to 33% year-over-year.

FactSet's consensus estimates of $3.350 billion in revenue and $0.98 in adjusted EPS sit at the midpoint of the revenue guidance range and the top end of the EPS guidance, respectively. Therefore, simply meeting market expectations may not be enough to drive the stock significantly higher, and the company may need to deliver stronger signals regarding NGS ARR, RPO, or guidance for the next fiscal year.

Among these metrics, NGS ARR is an important indicator for measuring the growth speed of next-generation security products, covering businesses such as SASE, cloud security, security operations, AI, and identity security. If this metric tops $8.95 billion, it would indicate that customer adoption of the unified security platform is continuing to accelerate, while also suggesting that CyberArk and Chronosphere are starting to generate more visible cross-selling opportunities.

RPO reflects contracted revenue that has not yet been recognized, serving as a gauge for future revenue visibility. Large platformization contracts often have longer execution cycles, and the timing of payments and revenue recognition can also be influenced by contract structure; therefore, single-quarter fluctuations in billings do not necessarily signal a drop in demand. Compared with traditional billings metrics, RPO and ARR better reflect long-term customer commitments.

However, because both metrics include acquired businesses, whether management can provide further disclosure on organic growth will be critical. If overall ARR growth approaches 60% but the core business excluding M&A slows noticeably, the market may reassess whether the current valuation has already priced in too much growth.

Wall Street Target Prices Continue to Rise

Currently, Wall Street as a whole remains generally bullish on PANW.

TipRanks data shows that among the 42 analysts covering PANW over the past 12 months, 37 gave a Buy rating, with an average 12-month price target of approximately $369.68 and a high target of $475.

JPMorgan (JPM) analyst Brian Essex maintained a Buy rating and raised the price target from $326 to $384. BofA Securities also reaffirmed a Buy rating with a $420 price target, believing that investors should focus on three key metrics: NGS ARR, RPO, and hardware revenue.

However, continuous price target hikes also indicate that market expectations are rapidly heating up. Palo Alto Networks has already experienced a significant stock rally this year, and the broader cybersecurity sector has also attracted capital inflows due to AI security demand. Recently, the market even expects that PANW's stock price could see a single-day move of about 8.5% following its earnings report.
