Silver Price Forecast: XAG/USD rises to near $53.00 amid election shift, weaker US Dollar

Source Fxstreet
  • Democratic election victories sparked Iran peace hopes, causing oil prices to drop and boosting Silver's appeal.
  • Strong private hiring supported expectations of a rate hike, though lower energy prices could temper near-term inflation.
  • Investors now await the Initial Jobless Claims and Nonfarm Payrolls report to gauge the Fed's next move.

Silver price (XAG/USD) gains ground for the second successive day, trading around $53.10 per troy ounce during the Asian hours on Thursday. Silver prices climbed as Democratic victories in the US midterm elections raised hopes for an end to the US-Iran conflict, triggering a sharp decline in oil prices.

The dollar-denominated and non-yielding white metal also drew support from a weaker US Dollar (USD) and falling Treasury yields, which boosted its appeal to investors. President Donald Trump acknowledged that Republicans lost due to the war and cited high gasoline prices as a key factor in the defeat, while signaling no immediate plans to escalate attacks on Iran.

Lower oil prices could help temper inflationary pressures, easing concerns about potential near-term interest rate increases. However, resilient domestic economic data continued to reinforce expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike. The ADP employment report showed private-sector hiring rose by 86,000 in October—beating expectations of 69,000—even as September’s figure was revised downward to 86,000 from 90,000. Meanwhile, the ISM Services PMI dipped slightly to 54.5 from 54.9, marginally missing the 54.8 forecast but remaining solidly in expansion territory.

These strong US economic indicators keep Federal Reserve (Fed) monetary policy expectations hawkish, with the CME FedWatch Tool showing markets pricing in nearly an 82% chance of another rate hike in December. Investors are now turning their attention to upcoming economic reports, including weekly US Initial Jobless Claims on Thursday and the Nonfarm Payrolls report on Friday.

DXY still seen trading above fair value despite post-election Dollar pullback

Analysts at Scotiabank reiterate that, even after the post-election pullback in the US Dollar, the broader DXY index remains rich versus their valuation framework. They “continue to highlight the DXY’s premium to our FV estimate based on 2Y spreads, which is closer to 100 (vs. spot in the mid-101s),” underscoring their view that the Dollar still trades above fair value despite the recent bout of weakness across G10 FX.

Silver FAQs

Silver is a precious metal highly traded among investors. It has been historically used as a store of value and a medium of exchange. Although less popular than Gold, traders may turn to Silver to diversify their investment portfolio, for its intrinsic value or as a potential hedge during high-inflation periods. Investors can buy physical Silver, in coins or in bars, or trade it through vehicles such as Exchange Traded Funds, which track its price on international markets.

Silver prices can move due to a wide range of factors. Geopolitical instability or fears of a deep recession can make Silver price escalate due to its safe-haven status, although to a lesser extent than Gold's. As a yieldless asset, Silver tends to rise with lower interest rates. Its moves also depend on how the US Dollar (USD) behaves as the asset is priced in dollars (XAG/USD). A strong Dollar tends to keep the price of Silver at bay, whereas a weaker Dollar is likely to propel prices up. Other factors such as investment demand, mining supply – Silver is much more abundant than Gold – and recycling rates can also affect prices.

Silver is widely used in industry, particularly in sectors such as electronics or solar energy, as it has one of the highest electric conductivity of all metals – more than Copper and Gold. A surge in demand can increase prices, while a decline tends to lower them. Dynamics in the US, Chinese and Indian economies can also contribute to price swings: for the US and particularly China, their big industrial sectors use Silver in various processes; in India, consumers’ demand for the precious metal for jewellery also plays a key role in setting prices.

Silver prices tend to follow Gold's moves. When Gold prices rise, Silver typically follows suit, as their status as safe-haven assets is similar. The Gold/Silver ratio, which shows the number of ounces of Silver needed to equal the value of one ounce of Gold, may help to determine the relative valuation between both metals. Some investors may consider a high ratio as an indicator that Silver is undervalued, or Gold is overvalued. On the contrary, a low ratio might suggest that Gold is undervalued relative to Silver.
