Dow Jones futures drop as Fed rate hike expectations surge

Source Fxstreet
  • US stock futures slid after strong PMI data signaled persistent inflation and potential Fed rate hikes.
  • Odds of an October 25-basis-point rate increase jumped to nearly 69%, shifting focus to jobless claims data.
  • Crude oil prices face upward pressure following Iranian warnings over sanctions and Strait of Hormuz navigation.

Dow Jones futures decline by 0.17% to trade near 51,780 during European hours on Thursday. Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures lose by 0.34% to trade around 7,750, while Nasdaq 100 futures depreciate 0.5% to trade near 30,610.

US stock futures declined as stronger-than-expected S&P Global PMI data revealed robust new orders along with multi-year highs in both input and output price inflation. The sharp uptick in inflationary pressures has driven renewed expectations that the Federal Reserve (Fed) will implement another interest rate hike before the end of the year.

Reflecting this shift in sentiment, market probability for a 25-basis-point Fed rate increase in October surged to nearly 69%, up significantly from 55.4% recorded just a day prior. Investors are now closely monitoring the upcoming U.S. weekly Initial Jobless Claims report for further insight into labor market strength, especially as several Federal Reserve officials continue to defend recent rate hikes and caution against persistent inflation risks.

This futures weakness follows a sluggish regular trading session on Wednesday, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.68%, the S&P 500 fell 0.75%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 1.13%. Wall Street experienced broad-based losses, with communication services, utilities, and consumer discretionary sectors leading the downturn.

US equities face renewed selling pressure

Analysts at Deutsche Bank highlight that it was “a rough day all round,” with risk assets coming under fresh pressure. They note that the S&P 500 “posted its biggest decline in a month” with a -0.75% drop, and caution that the weak tone has persisted into the new session, as “futures [are] down this morning.”

Meanwhile, crude oil prices face potential upward pressure amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran. Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted that Tehran would not bow to external threats, insisting on the nation's right to pursue nuclear technology for economic development. He further warned that Iran would restrict navigation through the critical Strait of Hormuz for as long as U.S. sanctions and blockades persist.

Dow Jones FAQs

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, one of the oldest stock market indices in the world, is compiled of the 30 most traded stocks in the US. The index is price-weighted rather than weighted by capitalization. It is calculated by summing the prices of the constituent stocks and dividing them by a factor, currently 0.152. The index was founded by Charles Dow, who also founded the Wall Street Journal. In later years it has been criticized for not being broadly representative enough because it only tracks 30 conglomerates, unlike broader indices such as the S&P 500.

Many different factors drive the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). The aggregate performance of the component companies revealed in quarterly company earnings reports is the main one. US and global macroeconomic data also contributes as it impacts on investor sentiment. The level of interest rates, set by the Federal Reserve (Fed), also influences the DJIA as it affects the cost of credit, on which many corporations are heavily reliant. Therefore, inflation can be a major driver as well as other metrics which impact the Fed decisions.

Dow Theory is a method for identifying the primary trend of the stock market developed by Charles Dow. A key step is to compare the direction of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and the Dow Jones Transportation Average (DJTA) and only follow trends where both are moving in the same direction. Volume is a confirmatory criteria. The theory uses elements of peak and trough analysis. Dow’s theory posits three trend phases: accumulation, when smart money starts buying or selling; public participation, when the wider public joins in; and distribution, when the smart money exits.

There are a number of ways to trade the DJIA. One is to use ETFs which allow investors to trade the DJIA as a single security, rather than having to buy shares in all 30 constituent companies. A leading example is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA). DJIA futures contracts enable traders to speculate on the future value of the index and Options provide the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the index at a predetermined price in the future. Mutual funds enable investors to buy a share of a diversified portfolio of DJIA stocks thus providing exposure to the overall index.
