Apple Sets Sept. 9 iPhone Event as CEO Changes - Can AAPL Break $319.50?

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - Apple closed at $313.45 on August 26 for a 1.15% increase, as investors treated to a September 9 product event to potentially unveil the latest series of iPhones and Apple's first foldable device. The event will occur just eight days after the date scheduled for John Ternus to become the new CEO. With an increase of 16% in the third fiscal quarter and the new Mac series focusing on local AI tasks, the question for now is if product excitement can take the price beyond the $319.50 resistance level.

September 9 Event Puts the iPhone Back at Center Stage

Apple has scheduled its product event for September 9. According to Reuters, the event will include the introduction of the new iPhone series and possibly, Apple's first foldable device. This providing the company with a new high-end product at a time when many hardware manufacturers are seeing challenges with growth in demand for smart devices and consequently aiming for higher average selling prices.

This event also has a unique impact given that on September 1, Tim Cook will become the Executive Chair and John Ternus will become the new CEO. Investors will Care as much about the products as about the first public appearances of the new leadership structure.

Q3 Growth Was Strong, but Tariff Refunds Flattered the Margin

Apple’s fiscal Q3 results are the most recent of their financial results. Revenue increased by 16% from the previous year to $109.4 billion while Diluted EPS increased by 29% to $2.02. iPhone, Mac and Services each set June-quarter revenue records, illustrating the breadth of growth and not reliance on the same business segments.

The quality of the margin beat needs context. Gross margin reached 50.1%, whereas Apple said tariff refunds might have accounted for about two percentage points. The same refunds could have been worth around $0.11 to EPS. Core performance showed strength. Though, investors may not consider the full Q3 margin level as a clean run rate for future quarters.

M6 Macs Add a Local-AI Hardware Catalyst

Apple Refreshed the Desktops on 25th August. The New Mac Mini features the M6 Chip built on 2 nm. Mac Studio now has configurations of M5 Max and M5 Ultra. Mac Mini starts at $899, and the device is targeted at light local workloads including, local AI agents, heavy computing, development and other intensive local tasks.

This is important because AI is not the only focus of Apple in the cloud. With faster on device silicon, Apple can provide private inference, tools, and applications locally with increasing capabilities. This can be another revenue channel for Apple while they continue to focus on the development and rollout of Siri in many regions which is still constrained.

AI and EU Regulation Still Create Execution Risk

Siri AI is locally developed, but Apple still lacks deployment uniformly. There is compatibility for Mac and Vision Pro users with Siri AI in the EU, but lack of deployment for the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch in the EU.Likewise, Apple continues to work on educating the Chinese regulatory bodies, and Siri AI and the new Apple Intelligence are unavailable. These changes should lessen the regulatory burden and create more certainty in the Services economic environment. Apple has to adapt to new channels of distribution and payment.

US Manufacturing Expansion Supports the Supply-Chain Story

August 13 was another historical day for Apple as they opened their Advanced Manufacturing Center in Houston. The facility, which builds and ships advanced AI servers, will start assembling Mac mini systems later on this year.

This investment aims to strengthen Apple’s efforts toward broader manufacturing in the United States, and while it may decrease some geopolitical and tariff risks, domestic manufacturing has been known to cost more than manufacturing in Asia.

Can Apple break above $319.50?

The technicals are shows signs of things to come, and are bullish as long as AAPL remains trading above the $310-$311 support level and the trendline. An hourly break above $319.50 would open $330.21. Resistance at $319.50 would confine the trading to $310-$311.

What is the biggest near-term catalyst for AAPL?

The clearest near term AAPL catalyst is the September 9th event, with the potential to include a new iPhone, the possibility of a folding phone, and a first look at a major product offering under Ternus's management. Investors anticipate signs of new offerings of hardware and AI features that can sustain Apple's double digit revenue growth.

Bottom Line

Apple has solid operating momentum heading into the September product announcements and a stronger Mac lineup and potentially significant management changes. The recent earnings performance in FQ3 was impressive, but headline margins and EPS may have incorporated tariff refund support. Above $310-$311, the short term technical view is bullish and $319.50 is the test. A break above this would be bullish for $330.21. A break below $310-$311 would weaken the bullishness leading into the September 9 event.
