Meta vs. Google: Which Is the Better Long-Term Investment? A Comprehensive Comparison of META and GOOGL Stocks

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - Meta (META) and Google's parent company Alphabet (GOOGL) are both core technology companies in the global digital advertising and artificial intelligence sectors. Meta primarily leverages AI to improve content recommendations and advertising efficiency across Instagram, Facebook, and Reels, while Google commercializes AI through Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Google Cloud simultaneously. So, for long-term investors, which of these two companies is the better investment?

Meta vs. Google: Latest Earnings Comparison

According to the latest earnings reports, both companies continue to maintain strong growth.

Meta's quarterly revenue reached $60.8 billion, up 28% year-over-year. Among this, ad revenue reached $59.36 billion, up 27% year-over-year; ad impressions grew 14%, and the average price per ad increased 12%. The total daily active people across Meta's family of apps, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, reached 3.6 billion, up 3% year-over-year.

Alphabet's revenue for the same period reached $119.8 billion, up 24% year-over-year. Google Search and other revenues grew 17%, and YouTube ad revenue grew 13%; most notably, Google Cloud revenue surged 82% year-over-year to $24.8 billion. Alphabet's overall operating profit increased 30% year-over-year, with its operating margin rising to 34%.

Looking solely at revenue growth, Meta is slightly faster; however, from a business structure perspective, Alphabet's revenue sources are more diversified.

Meta’s Advantage: AI Has Directly Boosted Ad Monetization

Meta's clearest AI investment thesis at present is not selling AI models, but leveraging AI to generate more revenue from its existing advertising business.

With massive user bases across Facebook and Instagram, AI can improve content recommendations to keep users engaged longer while helping advertisers target consumers more accurately, thereby driving the company's advertising revenue.

This model is already reflected in the latest financial results: Meta's second-quarter ad impressions grew by 14%, while the average price per ad also increased by 12%, driving advertising revenue to $59.36 billion.

This is also the key difference between Meta and many AI companies. The company does not need to wait for AI agents or large model subscriptions to become a mature market; its existing advertising business can already absorb the efficiency gains brought by AI.

Google's Advantage: Significantly More AI Monetization Channels

Alphabet's advantage lies in having a more complete AI industry chain.

First is Google Search. One of the market's biggest previous concerns was that generative AI such as ChatGPT might undermine the traditional search business. However, the latest data at least shows that Search is still growing. In the second quarter, Alphabet's Google Search and other revenue rose 17% year-over-year to $63.3 billion, while management also noted that AI features are driving an increase in search queries.

The second growth engine is Google Cloud. In the second quarter, Google Cloud revenue reached $24.8 billion, up 82% year-over-year, with operating profit reaching $8.8 billion and the operating margin improving to 35.6%. Cloud backlog reached $514 billion, with growth primarily driven by demand for enterprise AI infrastructure and AI solutions.

Compared with Meta, Google therefore has more AI commercialization avenues: Search ads, Gemini subscriptions, Google Cloud, Workspace, TPUs, and YouTube. This means that even if AI changes traditional search patterns in the future, Alphabet can still generate revenue from demand for cloud computing, AI infrastructure, and enterprise software.

From a long-term business structure perspective, this is a clear advantage for Google over Meta.

Key Advantages

Fast AI monetization in advertising

Key Risks

High advertising reliance, Reality Labs

High AI CapEx, search business transition

In terms of business moat and the diversity of AI monetization channels, Alphabet is more comprehensive.

Google possesses Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Cloud, Gemini, and in-house TPUs, allowing it to generate revenue from both consumer AI and enterprise AI markets simultaneously. Notably, Google Cloud's 82% growth in the second quarter indicates that AI has begun to form a major growth engine beyond advertising.

However, judging by current growth rates, valuations, and the visibility of AI return on investment, Meta offers a more attractive risk-reward profile at this stage.

Meta's second-quarter revenue grew 28%, with AI directly driving its core advertising business. Meanwhile, its forward P/E ratio stands at approximately 20.6x, lower than Alphabet's roughly 26.1x; although the company's annual AI CapEx is similarly massive, it remains significantly below Alphabet's for now.

Overall, Meta holds a slight advantage at this stage, primarily because its current earnings growth, valuation, and capital expenditures are better aligned; Alphabet's advantages lie over a longer horizon: if Google Cloud maintains rapid growth, Gemini expands monetization, and Search successfully completes its AI transformation, Alphabet's more diversified business structure could offer a higher ceiling for long-term growth.
