New Zealand Dollar recovers on weaker US Dollar, softer Oil ahead key US CPI

Source Fxstreet
  • The New Zealand Dollar recovers on Tuesday, benefiting from a weaker US Dollar following its recent 18-month high.
  • Falling Oil prices ease inflation concerns, but geopolitical tensions continue to weigh on risk-sensitive currencies.
  • Investors await Wednesday's US inflation report, as markets anticipate another interest rate hike in December.

NZD/USD rebounds on Tuesday, trading around 0.5610 at the time of writing, up 0.42% on the day. The pair recovered some of its recent losses after hitting its lowest level since April 2025 near 0.5580. The recovery comes amid a weakening US Dollar (USD), which retreats after reaching an 18-month high in the previous session.

The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the Greenback's performance against a basket of six major currencies, gives back most of Monday's gains after climbing above 102.60. The pullback is partly driven by easing Oil prices, which help alleviate concerns about inflationary pressures in the United States (US).

However, the New Zealand Dollar's (NZD) upside potential remains limited by geopolitical uncertainties. Persistent tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continue to fuel risk aversion across financial markets, weighing on currencies sensitive to global economic conditions, such as the Kiwi.

Geopolitical tensions intensified after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of violating an energy ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen reported fresh drone and missile attacks attributed to Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

Against this backdrop, safe-haven demand could continue to support the US Dollar despite its current correction, potentially limiting further gains in NZD/USD.

On the macroeconomic front, investors now turn their attention to the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for September, scheduled for release on Wednesday. The figures could influence expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve's (Fed) monetary policy outlook. Markets are already fully pricing in a 25-basis-point interest rate hike in December, while stronger-than-expected core inflation could fuel speculation about an earlier tightening move at the October 27-28 meeting.

Chart Analysis NZD/USD

In the one-hour chart, NZD/USD trades at 0.5612, holding a modest bullish bias as it stays above both the 100-period simple moving average (SMA) at 0.5602 and the 200-period SMA at 0.5604. The pair has recovered from earlier weakness and is now edging higher, with the Relative Strength Index (14) hovering around 62, which hints at firm but not yet overbought bullish momentum.

On the topside, initial resistance appears at the horizontal barrier near 0.5630, followed by a denser cap at 0.5649, ahead of higher levels at 0.5686 and 0.5735. On the downside, immediate support is provided by the current price area and the cluster of the 200- and 100-period SMAs between 0.5604 and 0.5602, while deeper floors are seen at 0.5580 and 0.5540, where buying interest could re-emerge if the pair retreats.
